The terms of container orchestration, led by Docker and Kubernetes: containers, pods, services, deployments and Helm, plus the Kubernetes objects and components that keep workloads running such as nodes, namespaces, ingress, config, storage and autoscaling.

Use it when

  • You need a precise definition of a Kubernetes or Docker term.
  • You are reading a manifest or an incident report and need the vocabulary.

Watch out for

  • Kubernetes terms mean specific API objects; do not use them interchangeably (a Deployment manages ReplicaSets, which manage Pods).
  • Object names and defaults vary slightly between Kubernetes versions and distributions.

The data

TermDescription
DockerPlatform for building and running containerized applications.
KubernetesOpen-source container orchestration platform.
ContainerLightweight isolated runtime environment.
PodSmallest deployable unit in Kubernetes holding one or more containers.
ServiceKubernetes abstraction exposing a set of pods as a network service.
DeploymentKubernetes controller managing pod replicas and updates.
HelmPackage manager for Kubernetes applications.
NodeA machine, virtual or physical, that runs pods and is managed by the control plane.
NamespaceA logical partition of a cluster used to separate teams, environments and resource quotas.
ReplicaSetEnsures a specified number of identical pods are running; usually managed by a Deployment.
StatefulSetManages pods that need stable identity and storage, such as databases.
DaemonSetRuns one copy of a pod on every node, used for log collectors and agents.
IngressRoutes external HTTP and HTTPS traffic to services inside the cluster.
ConfigMapHolds non-secret configuration that pods consume as environment variables or files.
SecretHolds sensitive values such as tokens and keys; base64-encoded by default and needs encryption at rest for real protection.
KubeletThe agent on each node that ensures the containers described by pod specs are running.
etcdThe consistent key-value store that holds all cluster state for the control plane.
Horizontal Pod AutoscalerAdjusts the number of pod replicas based on observed metrics such as CPU use.
Persistent VolumeA piece of cluster storage that outlives individual pods, claimed through a PersistentVolumeClaim.
