Cloud Service Models
Service models that define the level of management shared.
Service models that define the level of management shared.
The service models of cloud computing, from infrastructure (IaaS) through platform (PaaS) and software (SaaS) to function, container and desktop services, plus backend, database and machine-learning services. Each row gives the model, what the provider manages and example products.
| Model | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| IaaS | Infrastructure as a Service provides virtualized compute, storage, and networking. | AWS EC2, Azure VMs |
| PaaS | Platform as a Service offers managed development and deployment platforms. | Heroku, Google App Engine |
| SaaS | Software as a Service delivers applications over the internet. | Gmail, Salesforce |
| FaaS | Function as a Service runs event-driven code without managing servers. | AWS Lambda, Cloud Functions |
| CaaS | Container as a Service manages container orchestration. | Amazon ECS, Google GKE |
| DaaS | Desktop as a Service streams virtual desktops. | Amazon WorkSpaces, Azure Virtual Desktop |
| BaaS | Backend as a Service supplies ready-made backend features such as authentication, storage and real-time databases to client applications. | Firebase, Supabase |
| DBaaS | Database as a Service runs managed databases, handling provisioning, backups, patching and scaling. | Amazon RDS, MongoDB Atlas, Azure SQL Database |
| MLaaS | Machine Learning as a Service offers managed tools to train, host and monitor models. | Amazon SageMaker, Google Vertex AI, Azure Machine Learning |
