Licensing Reference Data: What CC0 Actually Means

licensing · cc0 · open-data · legal

YJTOON datasets are released under CC0 — the public domain dedication. That is a specific, deliberate choice with practical consequences for everyone who consumes the data.

What CC0 grants

  • Use for any purpose: commercial, research, personal, model training
  • Modify, combine, and redistribute without asking permission
  • No attribution required by the license itself

What CC0 does not grant

  • It does not transfer ownership of trademarks or the site's brand
  • It does not shield you from third-party rights that may exist in the underlying facts (facts themselves are not copyrightable; the specific arrangement and wording may be)
  • It does not promise accuracy — data is provided as-is

Why dedicate rather than require attribution?

Attribution licenses create compliance friction for machine consumers. A model cannot easily keep a license notice attached to every generated answer. CC0 removes that friction: the data can be copied, embedded, and transformed without a licensing decision at each step.

What good consumers do anyway

Even without a legal requirement, citing sources is good practice — a link back to the canonical dataset URL helps humans verify and helps the data stay traceable. The site's robots.txt and llms.txt make that citation easy to find.
